From Sina Weibo

In the United States, it is invasion of privacy and infliction of emotional distress; in China, it is law enforcement and a moral lesson for the public. Local police of Huai’an, Jiangsu province raided upon a hotel on the night of Valentine’s day with a camera team, and found two women and one man naked in one room. Not only did the police interrogated the three in the middle of the night, the tape was also aired on the provincial television later. When most Chinese netizens accuse the police of meddling in personal affairs, a police officer responded in Sina Weibo, “The police has every right to make a surprise inspection of places such as hotels at any time.”

One of the two women hides her face from camera.

Below is a transcript of the newscast.

Anchorwoman: At 1 a.m. of today, Huai’an police found during their surprise inspection of a hotel that in the same hotel room, two women and one men were all naked.

Police: You guys, one man and two women, don’t you abstain?

Woman A: Just the two of us sleep in one bed.

Police: You’ve merged two beds together! See?

(Voiceover: The woman explained that they three are colleagues. Staying in one room is out of safety concern. )

Woman A: The door is not safe. What can we (two women) do when someone breaks in?

(Voiceocer: However, even if it was out of safety concern, why were all three of them wearing nothing? Faced with police interrogation, the three couldn’t give an answer.

Police: So you three checked into one room?

Man: Ya, mainly because there was no other room left.

Police: There was no other room left, but she can’t be wearing nothing, can she?

(Voiceover: After police confirmation, the three are indeed co-workers. Then the police officer allowed the two women stay and made the man leave the room. )

Selected comments from Sina Weibo

读文字(In reply to the police officer’s Weibo comment about their right to inspect) I agree with your viewpoint of “Police have the right to make surprise inspection of places like hotels.” But the media should never have exposed it. Their problem is a moral issue. It has not yet risen to the legal level.

棋股人生:Do you have the gut to meddle with those officials who sleep with dozens of women? You look down upon people of low status.

蓝胜伟硕士:The police have abused power. The media have no ethics.

嫣然的叔:How nosy the police are!

老城的微博:Who allowed the police to satisfy their pervert desire to voyeur in the name of law?

美若凡尘:The hotel is a place for people to rest. As for how many take a rest there and in what manner, as long as it doesn’t break the law, no one is in the position to interfere.

木易漂杨:So this is the job that the police do?! There is nothing else for the police to do!? Police officers, if you have the gut, go search villas, search officials’ residences, search administrative offices, search upscale hotels, search five-star hotels…

鬼灵幽尸:Who can you blame for being born in China?

Richpeace富怡镶钻机:They were just playing Texas Hold’em! The rule: for each deal one loses, one has to take off a piece of clothing!

hughke: Who gave them the right to search the room? Did they have search warrant?

陈子弘微博达人:Smash the damn camera! I remember there is a U.S. documentary called “Smash His Camera.” The best way to deal with these licensed paparazzi is to smash their cameras first.

炎龟正传:Damn, just go hold beds of high-ranking officials in check first.

阿轮回归了:At first only two girls checked into the hotel. But when they used the bathroom, the tap was broken. The women were afraid of paying indemnity, so they telephoned the man for help with repairing the tap. He botched it, and got clothes of all three soaked. So they could only lie in bed and turn on A/C to air-dry their clothes. After his clothes became dry, the men was just about to leave when the police came. Whether or not you believe [this explanation], I sure believe it.

hbsq86:(They) don’t step in when they should, and step in when they shouldn’t.

吉普寨老农:This is the job that today’s policemen are the best at. It’s safe, it satisfies selfish desire, and it rakes in money.
